ScienceDirect now includes 25,000 science and technology books

STM publisher Elsevier has announced that ScienceDirect now includes 25,000 science and technology books. This increases the depth and breadth of Elsevier's book content available on the platform. The 25,000th book published and added to the database is Fukushima Accident: Radioactivity Impact on the Environment by Pavel Povinec, Katsumi Hirose and Michio Aoyama.

China has a flourishing academic black market involving scientists, agencies and journal editors, according to a report published in the Science magazine. The report, based on a five-month investigation by a team of reporters, reveals myriad questionable practices, including paying for author slots on papers written by other scientists and buying papers from online brokers.

IFLA publishes Statement on Libraries and Text and Data Mining

The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) has announced the publication of a Statement on Libraries and Text and Data Mining. The IFLA Governing Board approved the statement on December 4, 2013. The IFLA Statement is particularly timely. On December 5, 2013, the European Commission announced its public consultation on modernisation of copyright rules. Whether text and data mining should be facilitated by an exception is one question contained within that consultation.

Twenty nine organisations and 71 individuals oppose copyright term extension in Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has joined 28 other organisations and 71 individuals in a letter opposing a copyright term of life plus 70 years in the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP). Authors of the letter, sent to TPP negotiators on December 6, noted that there is no benefit to society of extending copyright beyond the 50 years mandated by the WTO.

Sciedu Press launches International Journal of Diagnostic Imaging

Sciedu Press, a Canada-based research publication agency in Canada, has announced the launch of the International Journal of Diagnostic Imaging. International Journal of Diagnostic Imaging is a new way of allowing open access, peer-reviewed online journal, which promotes and publishes original research based articles about and related to the clinical practices for Diagnostic Imaging.
