A week before the biggest meeting of the industry, Frankfurt Book Fair Director Juergen Boos talks of a start-up boom that has reached continental Europe

At a recent press conference in Berlin, director of the Frankfurt Book Fair Juergen Boos compared the state of international publishing to Germany's 19th century "Gründerzeit" - an age of pioneering entrepreneurship: "2012 was called the 'year of the start-up' in the USA and the UK. Now that spirit has also taken hold in Germany and the rest of Europe." Boos expects this pioneering spirit to be even more intensely palpable at the Book Fair.

ORCID announces project partners for the ORCID A&I Program

ORCID has announced the nine project partners who will be participating in the ORCID Adoption and Integration (A&I) Program. The ORCID A&I Program provides external funding for North American universities and science and social science professional associations to integrate ORCID identifiers, supports the elicitation and documentation of use cases and open source code, and establishes a collaborative venue for disseminating best practices.

Elsevier and The Geological Society of America collaborate to integrate more than 80,000 maps into Geofacets

STM publisher Elsevier and the Geological Society of America (GSA) have announced that geological maps from GSA's leading line of journals and books have been integrated into Geofacets, Elsevier's research tool for geoscientists working in exploration. The collaboration means that geoscientists in subscribing companies from the oil, gas, metals and mining industries can now access an additional 80,000+ peer-reviewed maps and associated metadata from market-leading publications.

Frontiers launches new OA journal in Cell and Developmental Biology

Open-access publisher Frontiers, part of the Nature Publishing Group family, has announced the launch of its Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology journal. The journal will constitute an open-science platform for publishing high-quality and rigorously peer-reviewed articles.

Springer set to publish international journal Academic Psychiatry

STM publisher Springer has announced that it will publish the journal, Academic Psychiatry, beginning January 2014. Springer will publish the journal in partnership with the Association for Academic Psychiatry, American Association of Chairs of Departments of Psychiatry, American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training and the Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry (the Consortium).

OCLC acquires Dutch library systems provider HKA

Computer library service OCLC has acquired the shares of Huijsmans en Kuijpers Automatisering (HKA), a Dutch organisation that develops, implements and manages systems for libraries, educational and cultural organisations. The addition of HKA, which offers the Wise line of library systems and services, enhances and extends OCLC services for libraries in the Netherlands.
