IEEE statement on appropriate use of bibliometric indicators in evaluation of scientific publications

The IEEE recently issued a statement on the appropriate use of bibliometric indicators in journal citations to emphasise the importance of providing accurate citation counts and other indicators when evaluating the quality and impact of scientific publications. The organisation recognises the increasing importance of bibliometric indicators as independent measures of quality or impact of any scientific publication and therefore explicitly and firmly condemns any practice aimed at influencing the number of citations to a specific journal.

Elsevier and Ex Libris announce collaborative initiative to incorporate SNIP and SNR journal metrics in the ranking of search results

STM publisher Elsevier and library automation solutions provider Ex Libris Group have announced a collaborative initiative to use the source normalised impact per paper (SNIP) and SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) metrics in calculating relevance ranking for Primo search results. The SNIP indicator takes into account the fact that the frequency of citations varies from one field to another. The SJR indicator combines several factors to produce a measure of the prestige of the citing source.

Columbia University Medical Center signs subscription agreement with McGraw-Hill Professional for AccessMedicine

McGraw-Hill Professional, a division of McGraw-Hill Education, has announced a subscription agreement with Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) for AccessMedicine, the company's premier online learning product. The agreement seeks to provide CUMC's students, residents, and physicians at four schools and teaching hospitals with instant access to the world's leading medical textbooks, including Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, Schwartz's Principles of Surgery, and Tintinalli's Emergency Medicine.

The Radiological Society of North America launches two journal apps, developed by Sheridan

Sheridan, a provider of print, publishing services and technology solutions to publishers, associations, university presses, and cataloguers has created two full-text journal apps for The Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) - one for Radiology, and the other for RadioGraphics. Each app accommodates both Apple and Android platforms.

Stanford University's HighWire Press has announced an expansion of their partnership with JBJS, Inc., with the migration of the growing suite of JBJS titles to the HighWire Open Platform. By mid-2014, The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, JBJS Case Connector, JBJS Essential Surgical Techniques, and the JBJS Archive, will sit alongside JBJS Reviews, their forthcoming journal on the HighWire platform.

Cengage Learning and Southwestern College Professional Studies partner to provide and develop online courses and curriculum

Educational content, software and services company Cengage Learning has announced a two-year partnership with Southwestern College Professional Studies in Kansas to provide Course360 general education online courses and to develop custom curriculum for new online courses. Through this new partnership, Southwestern College Professional Studies will adopt 32 Course360 courses for their online general education classes over the next two years.
