IEEE statement on appropriate use of bibliometric indicators in evaluation of scientific publications The IEEE recently issued a statement on the appropriate use of bibliometric indicators in journal citations to emphasise the importance of providing accurate citation counts and other indicators when evaluating the quality and impact of scientific publications. The organisation recognises the increasing importance of bibliometric indicators as independent measures of quality or impact of any scientific publication and therefore explicitly and firmly condemns any practice aimed at influencing the number of citations to a specific journal. The SNIP indicator takes into account the fact that the frequency of citations varies from one field to another. The SJR indicator combines several factors to produce a measure of the prestige of the citing source.
