Authors Guild disputes Google's fair use claim

Internet search services provider Google's scanning of books does not meet the legal definition of 'transformative,' creates potential harm to authors and other copyright holders, and is not protected as fair use under the law, the Authors Guild argues in a brief recently filed in the New York federal court. The only thing 'transformative' about Google's display of snippets of in-print books is that it transforms online browsers of book retailers to online users of Google's search engine.

OA journals and healthcare information strive for best sources for indexing and archiving medical research

The emergence and expansion of low quality/toll access indexing and archiving services has raised the active interest of open access publishers in the context of searching for the best service to index their resources and information. The editorial team of OMICS Group Scholarly Journals, consisting of professors, researchers and the institutional heads, have recommended a selective list of OMICS Group journals to be indexed in quality databases.

Allegheny College becomes latest member of HathiTrust

Allegheny College has become the latest member of HathiTrust, a partnership of major academic and research libraries collaborating in a digital library initiative to preserve and provide access to the published record in digital form. Over the last four years, the partners have contributed more than 10 million volumes to the digital library, digitised from their library collections through a number of means including Google and Internet Archive digitisation and in-house initiatives.
