Google and Scientific American launch second annual Scientific American Science in Action award

Internet search services provider Google and science magazine Scientific American has announced the launch of the second annual $50,000 Scientific American Science in Action award, powered by the Google Science Fair. The Scientific American Science in Action award honours a project that can make a practical difference by addressing an environmental, health or resources challenge.

Three nursing textbooks published by LWW receive American Journal of Nursing's Book of the Year award

The American Journal of Nursing (AJN) has awarded its prestigious AJN Book of the Year award to three nursing textbooks published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW), part of Wolters Kluwer Health. The LWW publications were honoured in the categories of information technology and informatics, critical care emergency nursing, and community public health.

New titles to be added to British Academy Publications Online

Academic publisher Oxford University Press and the British Academy for the humanities and social sciences have announced that the British Academy Publications Online (BAPO) will be updated with 28 new titles on January 31, 2013. British Academy Publications Online is an online collection of academic monographs and essay collections from the distinguished British Academy list.

Sara Lloyd to Chair 2013 LBF Digital Minds Conference

The London Book Fair, in association with the Publishers Association, has announced that Sara Lloyd, Director of Digital and Communications at Pan Macmillan, will chair the fifth Digital Minds Conference scheduled for April 14, 2013, at The Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in Westminster. The conference will build on the success of previous years, appealing to a global demographic with delegates and speakers coming from across the publishing industry and the media more widely.

WALDO selects Books at JSTOR programme for demand-driven acquisition model

JSTOR and WALDO have announced an agreement that enables WALDO member libraries to participate in the Books at JSTOR through both outright book purchases as well as a demand-driven acquisition programme. Books at JSTOR, which launched in November, features more than 15,000 books from 30 publishers.

Accelrys' electronic laboratory notebooks recognised in Gartner's enterprise category

Accelrys, Inc., a US-based provider of scientific innovation lifecycle management software, has announced that Gartner, Inc. has rated the company's electronic laboratory notebooks (ELN) as 'very high' or 'high' in each scientific and functional domain in a recent report on considerations for selecting an ELN. Accelrys was the only vendor with ELNs that achieved those ratings in all categories.

JISC-funded research creates toolkit for greener teaching and learning in HE sector

An Open University study funded by the JISC has found that teaching models in higher education institutions are not green enough. The project culminated in the design of the SusTEACH toolkit - an online resource offering tools for lecturers, academic designers and students to make institutions 'greener'.
