Quality and peer review survey results, created by Sense about Science and Elsevier, published at the start of international Peer Review Week

Ten years on from the influential peer review survey of 2009, new findings show researchers have confidence in peer review, but strains on the system – including the increasing volume of research outputs and platforms to access research - are causing them to worry about quality and reliability. The survey found that researchers do not want to replace the peer review process, as 75 percent are satisfied with it (compared to 69 percent in 2009). Researchers want to improve and extend the system.

American Chemical Society announces changes to Publications Division leadership

The American Chemical Society (ACS) has named Dr. James Milne, senior vice president of the Journals Publishing Group, as acting president of the ACS Publications Division. Milne will take the reins from Dr. Brian Crawford, who had announced his plans to retire earlier this year. Milne will serve in this acting role while the Society continues its active recruitment to fill the executive position.

OA in the open white paper surfaces challenges, opportunities, next steps for open access collecting

A new white paper, 'OA in the Open: Community Needs and Perspectives,' from the Supporting OA Collections in the Open project documents a series of conversations with librarians with expertise in collections, acquisitions, scholarly communication, and administration, from diverse institutions, regarding their experiences and attitudes towards financially supporting open access (OA) content. The project was led by librarians at James Madison University (JMU), in partnership with the Association of Research Libraries (ARL).

Digital Science launches report focusing on falsifiability and reproducibility in scientific research

Digital Science has launched a report focusing on falsifiability and reproducibility in scientific research. The report addresses three areas including appropriate documentation and sharing of research data, clear analysis and processes, and the sharing of code. Making Science Better: Reproducibility, Falsifiability and the Scientific Method looks at the current state of reproducibility in 2019, as well as the importance of falsifiability in the research process.

Research Square appoints Rachel Burley as President

Rachel Burley has spent more than eighteen years in senior roles in the publishing industry and joins Research Square from Springer Nature, where she was VP and Publishing Director for the BMC Group of journals before becoming VP Open Publishing Innovations in 2019.
