New report looks at how European funders are approaching Open policy and practices

A report that reveals the Open Access and Open Science policies, incentives and practices of European funders has been released. Based on a survey conducted in late spring, the report is a first of its kind to examine what key international funding bodies (international and national funding bodies, major charities and foundations, national academics and key research performing organisations) are doing to incentivise openness to the work they help fund.

De Gruyter increases staff to better serve authors, partners and customers in the US

De Gruyter, an independent international academic publisher with roots in Germany, has significantly increased its presence in the United States by growing its office in Boston by 30 percent. The 16 colleagues in De Gruyter's Boston office and 14 colleagues in the rest of the country serve authors and librarians in the United States, Canada and Central and South America.

Northumbria University and Figshare partner to launch institutional research data repository

Northumbria University has announced the launch of its institutional data repository, powered by Figshare and available on a custom domain at figshare.northumbria.ac.uk. The service will be available for all academic staff and postgraduate researchers at the university, giving them a citable DOI, a space for collaboration, and usage metrics for their research data. Using their university login credentials, researchers will be able to upload and share their research data with a reusable license.

Research on Research Institute to enable more strategic, open, diverse, and inclusive research

The Wellcome Trust, the universities of Sheffield and Leiden, and Digital Science, have announced the launch of the Research on Research Institute (RoRI) – an international consortium of research funders, academic institutions, and technologists working to champion the latest approaches to research on research. The RoRI consortium will undertake transformative and translational research on research (also known as meta-research, science of science or meta-science). By analysing research systems and experimenting with decision and evaluation data, tools and frameworks, the aim is to advance more strategic, open, diverse and inclusive research.

CEN and ASTM International sign Technical Cooperation Agreement

CEN, the European Committee for Standardization, and ASTM International have signed a Technical Cooperation Agreement with the aim to facilitate global dialogue and coordination in specific standardisation areas of mutual interest. The Agreement establishes a framework for technical cooperation and information exchange between the two standardisation organisations, thus facilitating dialogue and convergence on the technical requirements and related attributes of standards development, and preventing duplication of efforts, for the benefit of their respective stakeholders.

Weizmann Institute of Science opts for Ex Libris Esploro to manage and showcase research output and data

Ex Libris®, a ProQuest company, has announced that Israel's Weizmann Institute of Science has selected the Ex Libris EsploroTM research services solution to help the institute capture research output and data from external sources, showcase the institute's research work, and comply with funders' open-access policies. The Esploro solution will replace Weizmann's institutional research repository and will be integrated with the institute's research information system.

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) elected its 2019–2020 Board of Directors on September 24 during the Fall 2019 Association Meeting in Washington, DC.
