Brill has taken over the publishing responsibilities from Naturalis Biodiversity Center. Focusing on all systematics-related branches of comparative zoology (including paleontology), the journal began as a publication of the Committee in charge of the library of the Dutch Royal Zoological Society "Natura Artis Magistra".
