Thomson Reuters launches contest for innovative use of Web of Knowledge APIs

Thomson Reuters has launched Build Challenge, a contest designed to expand the discovery experience offered by Web of Knowledge. The competition challenges the research community to develop visualisation tools illustrating the connections found in data, citations and research by using Web of Knowledge APIs.

JISC Collections Information Services purchases Springer Protocols

The JISC Collections Information Service has bought the Springer Protocols. With this, all higher education and research institutions in the UK can expect to obtain free access to the largest data collection in the field of life sciences from the years 2008 to 2012.

SAGE launches open access journal, 'Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine'

SAGE has launched a new international OA journal, the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine, developed by the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. OJSM will publish content for both researchers and practitioners studying orthopeadic sports medicine, arthroscopy and knee arthroplasty.

Former ACS president Bassam Shakhashiri bags CSSP's Sagan Award

The Council of Scientific Society Presidents (CSSP) has honoured American Chemical Society's (ACS) past president Bassam Z. Shakhashiri for decades of efforts in promoting public understanding of science. The group has named Shakhashiri as recipient of the 2013 Sagan Award for Public Understanding of Science.

Scientific journals in US told to avoid manuscripts from Iran governmental researchers

Scientific journals are being asked to help tighten US trade sanctions on Iran. Dutch publisher Elsevier has sent a note to its editorial network saying that all US editors and US reviewers must 'avoid' handling manuscripts if they include an author employed by the Iran government.

Authors value rigorous peer review, says Taylor & Francis survey

Taylor & Francis has released the sixth press release on the findings of the Open Access Survey. Respondents were asked about the kind of peer review they find the most suitable for their research, and 45 percent said they would 'always' value a 'rigorous assessment'.
