Elsevier enhances Article Page Design on ScienceDirect

STM publisher Elsevier has announced the next step in enhancing its article page design on ScienceDirect. Following initial changes made earlier this year, moving away from the traditional linear article by improving in-article navigation and readability, the article has now been further transformed into an interactive HTML format.

IET announces first Chief Advisor for new OA journal

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has announced the appointment of Professor Lionel Tarassenko, the first of a team of Chief Advisors who will support and promote The Journal of Engineering, the IET's new open access publication, due for launch in 2013. The decision to establish an international team of Chief Advisors reflects the broad scope and global reach of the new journal which will provide open access to essential engineering intelligence.

Plantwise Knowledge Bank from CABI 'Highly Commended' at 2012 ALPSP Awards

Not-for-profit life sciences publisher CABI has announced that the Plantwise Knowledge Bank, a new initiative from the company, has been highly commended in the Publishing Innovation category at the 2012 ALPSP awards. Part of the wider Plantwise programme, the Knowledge Bank helps extension workers, government organisations and researchers support farmers by providing vital information on essential crops and the pests and diseases which attack them.

JISC Collections' new funded shared service to help universities manage their e-resources

JISC Collections has announced a new shared service that aims to help UK libraries manage their e-resources more efficiently. Called Knowledge Base+, the service is being established to start addressing the challenges facing libraries due to the inadequate data and metadata about publications, packages, subscriptions, entitlements and licences that is available throughout the e-resource supply chain.

RSC welcomes additional funding for research, but calls for long-term investment

The President of the UK's Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) has welcomed the government's announcement of a £200 million extra investment for the Research Partnership Investment Fund. However, RSC has called for the Conservative party to commit to long-term investment in science to boost the economy.

Cyprus becomes a CERN Associate Member State

The CERN Director-General, Rolf Heuer, and the Cyprus Minister of Education and Culture, George Demosthenous, have signed an agreement under which Cyprus will become an Associate Member State in the pre-stage to Membership. The agreement will have to be ratified by the Cyprus Parliament.
