Frankfurt Book Fair presentation argues for broader implementation of chapter level metadata

Richard Kobel, Assistant Vice President of Business Development at Scope e-Knowledge Center, a leading content enhancement and knowledge services provider, presented at the Hot Spot Professional & Scientific Information (Hall 4.2) at the recently concluded Frankfurt Book Fair. During his presentation, Kobel argued that academic books have not enjoyed much visibility online. DOIs and other metadata at the chapter level, including abstracts and keywords, is critical to discoverability.

BMJ launches six specialty editions of 'BMJ Open' for Open Access Week

BMJ Group has launched six specialty editions of its online journal, BMJ Open, to coincide with Open Access Week. The editions are meant to showcase BMJ Open's specialist research, and will initially cover dermatology, HIV/AIDS, infectious diseases, neurology, obstetrics & gynaecology and oncology.

OCLC Research announces new prototype service for efficient FAST Subject Assignment using Autosuggest

Library information provider OCLC Research has announced the availability of assignFAST, a new web service that automates the manual selection of FAST (Faceted Application of Subject Terminology) Subjects based on autosuggest technology. The service takes advantage of the features of FAST. Faceting, along with a fully controlled vocabulary, allows simple selection and authority control to take place that would be hard to accomplish in LCSH.

BioMed Central, Chinese institution to launch new journal 'Infectious Diseases of Poverty'

BioMed Central, with China's National Institute of Parasitic Diseases, is set to launch a new journal, Infectious Diseases of Poverty, in Beijing at the Second Global Symposium on Health Systems Research. The journal will publish original work on transdisciplinary research for the control of infectious diseases affecting poor populations.

SAGE's three new open access journals now open for submissions

Academic publisher SAGE has announced that all three of their latest open access journals are now open for submission. The journals are: SAGE Open Medicine, SAGE Open Medical Case Reports and SAGE Open Engineering. All three titles complement SAGE's rapidly expanding portfolio of over 200 titles in engineering, health and medicine, providing an even wider choice of publication opportunities for authors.

Association of Research Libraries publishes ARL Statistics 2010–2011

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has published the ARL Statistics 2010–2011, the latest in a series of annual publications that describe the collections, staffing, expenditures, and service activities of ARL's 126 member libraries in 2011. Of these, 115 are university libraries (16 in Canada and 99 in the US); the remaining 11 are public, governmental, and non-profit research libraries (2 in Canada, 9 in the US).

IOP Publishing moves to CC-BY licence for OA articles and bibliographic metadata

Non-profit scientific publisher Institute of Physics (IOP) Publishing has announced a significant change to its copyright arrangements for research published on an open access basis in the company's wholly owned journals and for bibliographic metadata. As a result of this move, the company will adopt a more liberal Creative Commons licence (CC-BY 3.0) for future articles published on a 'gold' open access basis.

Thieme publishes updated edition of bestselling manual on endoscopic sinus surgery

STM publisher Thieme Publishing Group recently published the 'Endoscopic Sinus Surgery, Third Edition.' This operative manual has been updated and expanded to include three new chapters on anatomy of the sphenoid, surgery of the craniocervical junction, and management of carotid artery and other major vessel injury.
