PLOS collaborates with ORCID to include credit for reviewers

PLOS has announced that its collaboration with ORCID now includes credit for reviewers. For more than five years, PLOS authors have used ORCID to make their professional lives easier. Now reviewers at PLOS can take advantage of the same benefits to track their contributions, claim credit, and build up their research profiles. Reviewers can now enter their ORCID iD in the Editorial Manager submission system for all PLOS journals and automatically get credit when they complete a review, the same way they would for their published articles.

Plans for a new Open Access Book Network take shape

Foundational planning is currently underway for the formation of an Open Access Book Network. Development of this network was the topic of a recent ELPUB 2019 Conference panel session led by Eelco Ferwerda from OAPEN, with the University of Cambridge's Rupert Gatti, Pierre Mounier of OPERAS, Andrea Bertino of SUB Goettingen, and SPARC Europe Director Vanessa Proudman.

AAP files comments urging FTC to scrutinise dominant online platforms more closely

The Association of American Publishers (AAP) filed comments with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) —in connection with the Commission's hearings on Competition and Consumer Protection in the 21st Century—urging the Commission to more closely scrutinise the behavior of dominant online platforms that pervade every aspect of the economy. In its 12-page filing, AAP underscores the fact that dominant technology platforms exercise extraordinary market power in the markets for book distribution and Internet search.

All ARPHA-hosted journals indexed in Transpose to support transparency in journal policies

All open-access, peer-reviewed academic titles of Pensoft, as well as those using the white-label publishing solution provided by the scholarly publishing platform ARPHA, have their journal policy data fed into the Transpose database, in order to increase their discoverability and transparency. As a result of the recent integration with the community-sourced initiative Transpose, details about each journal's approach to peer review, co-review and preprint publication can be easily accessed, navigated and compared through a user-friendly interface.

EDP Sciences journals reports impressive results in 2019 Journal Citation Reports

EDP Sciences has reported excellent results in the 2019 Journal Citation Reports® (JCR) published by Clarivate Analytics. Twenty-one EDP Sciences journals are tracked, over half of which show an increase in their Impact Factor with nine increasing by over 10%. Astronomy & Astrophysics earned an increased Impact Factor of 6.209 – up 11.6% from last year. It is now the leading original research journal in its field and has retained its rank of 10/69 in the Astronomy and Astrophysics category which has more journals in it than last year.

Two new 'read and publish' deals drives Springer Nature's transformative deals into double figures

Springer Nature has announced new agreements with the Bibsam consortium in Sweden and Norway's Unit consortium, taking the number of Springer Nature's 'read and publish' deals to ten, putting the publisher firmly on the path to becoming a transformative publisher. In a first for Springer Nature, Bibsam, representing the institutional libraries, and four of Sweden's funding bodies (the Swedish Research Council, Formas, Forte and Vinnova) have agreed a deal which will see them share the costs of publishing in Springer Nature's OA journals.

Wolters Kluwer study finds medical students spending more on mobile & online board review prep for licensing exams

Medical students increased their investment in information and educational resources by 14% in 2018, with approximately 60% of those dollars going toward board review and preparatory support, according to a survey of American Medical Student Association (AMSA) members. The survey, conducted in coordination with Wolters Kluwer, Health, also found that more than half of medical students rank online question banks such as those in the company's AI-powered Firecracker® solution among their top three tools for course study.

ECS partners with IOP Publishing for journal services

The Electrochemical Society (ECS) has selected IOP Publishing (IOPP) as its journals publishing partner. Starting in 2020, IOPP will partner with ECS in the publication of the Journal of the Electrochemical Society and the ECS Journal of Solid State Science and Technology and the hosting of ECS Transactions, ECS Meeting Abstracts, and Interface as well as the hosting of the archives for ECS's retired publications.

Raissa D'Souza appointed Lead Editor of Physical Review Research

Raissa D'Souza, Professor in the University of California, Davis departments of Computer Science and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, has been appointed Lead Editor of Physical Review Research. She joins fellow Lead Editors Nicola Spaldin and Jian-Wei Pan on the editorial leadership team of APS's new open access, multidisciplinary journal, which is now open for submissions.

Three Universities have joined the OCLC Research Library Partnership (RLP). The new partners are: Louisiana State University (LSU), the University of Nevada, Reno, and Virginia Tech. The LSU Libraries support the academic mission of the university by fostering teaching, learning, and research. The libraries contain more than 4 million volumes and provide additional resources such as expert staff, technology, services, electronic resources, and facilities that advance research, teaching, and learning across every discipline.
