Southeast Asia is one region that has invested heavily in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and as a result boasts huge growth in its AI capabilities and understanding. Developers in Southeast Asia are increasingly competing to uncover new approaches and broaden its reach. By recognizing AI's capacity to influence both business and social settings, the region has published a diverse range of AI-related research papers and patents in recent years.

VSNU and the Royal Society of Chemistry Publishing unable to reach new agreement for access to journals

The Dutch universities and Royal Society of Chemistry Publishing (RSC) have been unable to reach a new agreement on access to scientific journals. The VSNU's aim in the negotiations was to secure a transition to open access without Dutch academics having to pay double to access articles. The costs of transitioning to open access would be substantially higher with this publisher than what is being currently paid for access, and therefore was unacceptable to the Dutch universities.

McGraw-Hill Education and Unizin in deal to make affordable digital learning materials available to 25 universities and nearly 1 million students

Learning science company McGraw-Hill Education has announced a new agreement with Unizin, Ltd. ("Unizin") to provide its 25 member universities with affordable, high-value, digital learning materials through an Inclusive Access model - automatically giving students easy access to materials on the first day of class. The non-profit Unizin consortium serves nearly 1 million students and is dedicated to improving teaching and learning environments with digital technology.

Oncotarget publications to be indexed in Chan Zuckerberg Initiative's Meta database

Oncotarget has announced that its peer-reviewed research publications will be indexed in Meta, a world-renowned database of scientific literature, alongside other Impact Journal publications. Meta was acquired by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative in an effort to make Meta's artificial intelligence (AI) technologies available to enhance scientists' ability to search, read, and tie together millions of scientific papers.

Applications for 2018 Altmetric Annual Research Grant now open

Alternative metrics provider Altmetric has opened the call for applications for its 2018 Annual Research Grant. First awarded in 2016, the grant provides up to £1,500 ($1,900 USD) to support research studies that explore different facets of altmetrics or a related topic that impacts the research ecosystem. The grant aims to support projects that would not otherwise receive the necessary funding.
