European Commission opens formal antitrust investigation into Amazon's e-book distribution arrangements

The European Commission has opened a formal antitrust investigation into certain business practices by Amazon in the distribution of electronic books ("e-books"). The Commission will in particular investigate certain clauses included in Amazon's contracts with publishers. These clauses require publishers to inform Amazon about more favourable or alternative terms offered to Amazon's competitors and/or offer Amazon similar terms and conditions than to its competitors, or through other means ensure that Amazon is offered terms at least as good as those for its competitors.

Elsevier provides free online access to medical information to help contain MERS outbreak in South Korea

STM publisher Elsevier will provide free access to its primary online clinical information and reference tool, ClinicalKey, for 30 days to all users within South Korea. This initiative was launched to support healthcare professionals and quarantine aid-workers in South Korea, which has been plagued with the outbreak of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus.

SAGE set to launch the Journal of Connectivity

Academic publisher SAGE is set to launch the Journal of Connectivity in partnership with the Institute of Measurement and Control. An interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed, open access (OA) publication, the Journal of Connectivity is designed to facilitate the exploration of the Internet of Things. Ron Summers, Loughborough University and Zhipeng Wu, University of Manchester, will serve as the Editors-in-Chief.

The American College of Physicians (ACP) has announced a partnership with EBSCO Health. This initiative will give 141,000 ACP members complimentary access to DynaMed PlusTM, a new cross-platform evidence-based clinical decision support tool. ACP is contributing expertise, content, and multimedia to DynaMed Plus. DynaMed Plus provides clinicians with the ideal blend of evidence and expertise to help them determine optimal patient care paths.
