EndNote collaborates with Science Hack Day to bring global event to Madagascar

Thomson Reuters EndNote, the leading software for researchers, librarians and students to manage bibliographies, citations and references, has announced a collaboration with Science Hack Day – a global grassroots movement aimed at empowering scientific innovation - to bring the event to Africa. The continent's first-ever Science Hack Day will be held in Antananarivo, Madagascar, August 9-10 at Habaka, a local innovation hub and business start-up incubator dedicated to advancing the country's efforts in technology through collaboration.

CrossRef and California Digital Library in deal to extend discoverability of scholarly publications

CrossRef and the California Digital Library (CDL) have signed an agreement that opens a route for library publishers to participate in the scholarly communications hub created by CrossRef. Through the agreement, publishers using CDL's EZID digital identifier service may now choose to deposit the metadata for their content in the CrossRef system.

Six months post launch, 80 percent of UK library services sign up to Access to Research

Ten million academic articles, including content from IOP Publishing, are now included in the Access to Research initiative. The service, launched in February 2014, now has 163 local authorities committed to providing Access to Research to their users, amounting to 80 percent of UK local authorities. The Access to Research service is available from Torbay to the Shetlands and from Powys to Brent, with more local authorities expected to join over the coming months.

Emerald Group Publishing performs well in Thomson Reuters' Journal Citation Reports

Academic publisher Emerald Group Publishing has announced that 56.4 percent of its indexed titles have increased in Impact Factor following the release of the 2013 Journal Citation Reports (JCR) by Thomson Reuters. Notable successes include Supply Chain Management, with a new Impact Factor of 2.916 bringing the journal into the top quartile of both the Business and Management subject categories.

ARL publishes Open Source Software, SPEC Kit 340

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has released Open Source Software, SPEC Kit 340, which investigates ARL member libraries' adoption and/or development of open source software (OSS) for functions such as integrated library system (ILS), discovery layer, electronic resource management, interlibrary loan, digital asset management, institutional repository, course reserve, streaming media, study room scheduler, digital preservation, publishing, floor maps, data warehouse, or other library-related purposes. This SPEC Kit explores research libraries' policies and practices on open sourcing their code, the frequency with which research libraries contribute to open source projects, whether research libraries are reluctant to make their code openly available, and the most common benefits and challenges encountered when research libraries open source their code.
