CERN openlab publishes whitepaper on future IT challenges in scientific research

CERN openlab, the public-private partnership between CERN, leading IT companies and research institutes, has released a whitepaper on future IT challenges in scientific research to shape its upcoming three-year phase starting in 2015. The whitepaper defines the ambitious challenges covering the most crucial needs of IT infrastructures in domains such as data acquisition, computing platforms, data storage architectures, compute provisioning and management, networks and communication, and data analytics.

NINR appoints three new members to the National Advisory Council for Nursing Research

The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) has announced the appointment of three new members to the National Advisory Council for Nursing Research (NACNR), the institute's principal advisory board. Members of the council are drawn from the scientific and lay communities, embodying a diverse perspective from the fields of nursing, public and health policy, law, and economics. NINR, a component of the National Institutes of Health, is the primary federal agency for the support of nursing research.

SPARC releases statement on FIRST Act

The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Research Coalition's (SPARC) Executive Director Heather Joseph has released a statement on Science, Space, and Technology markup of H.R. 4186, the Frontiers in Innovation, Research, Science and Technology (FIRST) Act. Representative Lofgren (D-CA) offered an amendment to Section 303 on behalf of herself and Representative Sensenbrenner (R-WI) to replace the current language with the text similar to that of the Public Access to Public Science Act (H.R. 3157). The amendment was passed by voice vote.

The American Geophysical Union names John Orcutt editor of Earth Space and Science Journal

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) has announced that John Orcutt, a distinguished professor of Geophysics at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and former president of AGU, will serve as the inaugural editor of its newest open access, peer-reviewed journal, Earth and Space Science. The journal will begin accepting papers in late summer 2014, and the first articles will be available in late fall 2014.

Sheridan launches automated, XML-Based ArticleWorkflows

Sheridan has launched ArticleExpress, a new patent-pending workflow for STM publishers that replaces the traditional PDF-based article proof with a fully editable, browser-based, HTML proofing environment. In this new workflow, authors, editors, and publishers can easily review and directly edit article content in a browser application while still maintaining the structure of the underlying XML.

Publishers Association appoints new officers

The Publishers Association has announced the appointment of new officers with Dominic Knight, Chairman of Palgrave Macmillan and Executive Director of Change Programmes, Macmillan Science and Education, appointed as President, and Joanna Prior, Managing Director, Penguin, as Vice-President and Treasurer. The PA Trade Publishers Council has also seen new appointments with Jamie Byng, Managing Director, Canongate, being confirmed as Chair.
