CAS announces 2013 SciFinder Future Leaders in Chemistry programme participants

Chemical information provider Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), a division of the American Chemical Society, has announced the 2013 SciFinder Future Leaders in Chemistry programme participants. Since 2010, the program has been dedicated to providing Ph.D. students - and for the first time this year, postdoctoral researchers - from around the world an opportunity to help shape the future of chemical information.

Elsevier announces 2012 Journal Impact Factor highlights

STM publisher Elsevier has announced the highlights of its journal Impact Factor performance in 2012. According to the 2012 Journal Citation Reports (JCR) published by Thomson Reuters, Elsevier saw 53 percent of its journal Impact Factors increase from 2011 to 2012. Furthermore, 17 percent of Elsevier journals are in the top 10 percent of their subject category.

zbMATH launches redesigned user interface with more intuitive and visual user guidance

Zentralblatt MATH (zbMATH), a leading online database for mathematics, has launched a redesigned user interface with more intuitive and visual user guidance. The changes were made following a survey conducted by the European Mathematical Society in 2012 among zbMATH users. The new website marks the first step in implementing feedback from the surveyed scientists.

Scientific American announces science fiction competition, Quantum Shorts

Science magazine Scientific American has announced the Quantum Shorts 2013 competition, in partnership with Tor Books, a science fiction and fantasy publisher, and the Centre for Quantum Technologies at the National University of Singapore. The Quantum Shorts contest encourages readers to submit a short story that is inspired by quantum theory.

SAGE reports strong performance in 2012 Journal Citation Reports

Academic publisher SAGE reported strong performance across its journals portfolio in the 2012 Journal Citation Reports (Thomson Reuters, 2013), with an increase of 30 indexed titles on prior year to 461 across both the Social Science (SSCI) and Science (SCI) Citation Indexes. Over the last five years, SAGE has experienced consistent growth in its coverage in the reports, with the increase in the number of JCR-indexed journals exceeding 60 percent.

Student use of alternative and illicit course materials on the rise, says new BISG survey

Student use of alternative and illicit course materials is on the rise, according to new research from the Book Industry Study Group (BISG)'s ongoing survey of Student Attitudes Toward Content in Higher Education. The second instalment in Volume Three of the study, powered by Bowker Market Research, shows that the percentage of students reporting they had downloaded course content from an unauthorized Web site has risen steadily to 34 percent from 20 percent when it was first measured in 2010.

The Dutch Publishers Association creates e-textbook offering with VitalSource Bookshelf platform

Vital Source Technologies, Inc. and CB, a Netherlands-based educational content provider, have announced an agreement with the Dutch Publishers Association to develop a comprehensive e-textbook fulfillment platform for the higher education system throughout the region. Publishers that are members of the association and that work with CB will have the opportunity to take advantage of expanded title reach through the platform, beginning this month.
