Version One of new STN available in beta for fixed fee customers

The STN partners - CAS and FIZ Karlsruhe - have announced that Version One of the new STN platform is now available in beta for fixed fee customers. The version introduces project-oriented workflow, improved usability and "no limits" search architecture for expert and novice professional searchers.

Royal Society of Chemistry acquires The Merck Index

The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) has announced that The Merck Index will join the highly acclaimed publishing portfolio of the Society. In the agreement with Merck, the Royal Society of Chemistry will take over publication by launching the 15th edition, due out in April. The new edition has been extensively revised and updated.

Thomson Reuters re-launches ScienceWatch.com

The IP & Science business of Thomson Reuters has announced the re-launch of ScienceWatch.com, an open, web-based resource dedicated to scientific metrics and research performance analysis. The newly re-launched website has incorporated an innovative tagging system to differentiate content and optimise search results.

The American Physiological Society and The Physiological Society partner with Wiley to launch new OA journal

Publisher John Wiley & Sons, Inc., The Physiological Society (TPS) and The American Physiological Society (APS) have announced their partnership to publish the new open access peer-reviewed journal, Physiological Reports, which will launch early next year. Dr. Susan Wray of the University of Liverpool, UK, will serve as the Editor-in-Chief of the journal.

Springer set to publish Computational & Applied Mathematics journal

STM publisher Springer will publish the research journal Computational & Applied Mathematics, a primary scientific publication of the Brazilian Society of Computational and Applied Mathematics (SBMAC), starting in 2013. Published three times a year, the journal will be available electronically on link.springer.com and in print.

Serials Solutions in deal with five German publishers to index their scholarly content in Summon discovery service

Serials Solutions, a ProQuest business, has announced that the company is working with several eminent German publishers to index their scholarly content in the Summon discovery service. This German-language content is among the most widely subscribed to by academic institutions in Germany, as well as many libraries worldwide, and includes resources covering law, life sciences and the humanities.

EBSCO offers scholarships for librarians to attend 2013 ALA Midwinter Meeting

Information services provider EBSCO in co-sponsorship with the American Library Association (ALA) has awarded five librarians $1,500 scholarships to attend the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Seattle from January 25-29, 2013. As part of the application process, librarians were asked to write an essay on the topic 'The conversation starts here: How would you lead the discussion in your library to bring about meaningful change to an existing process, service, or procedure?'

This SPEC Kit explores how research institutions are currently organising staff to support scholarly communication services, and whether their organisational structures have changed since 2007, when member libraries were surveyed about their scholarly communication education initiatives.
