Higher education publishers join Ohio textbook affordability initiative

AAP members Macmillan, McGraw-Hill, Pearson, and Wiley recently partnered with the Ohio Library and Information Network (OhioLINK) and the Ohio Department of Higher Education on state-wide Inclusive Access textbook affordability initiative. Ninety non-profit institutions of higher education in Ohio are members of OhioLINK. The initiative could save Ohio's 450,000 college students nearly $40 million a year on course materials.

French research organisations and universities and SpringerNature unable to reach consensus for access to journals; publisher continues access while talks continue

French research organisations and universities have reportedly cancelled their subscriptions to Springer journals. The move is the result of an impasse in fee negotiations between the publisher and Couperin.org, a national consortium representing over 250 academic institutions in France. Couperin.org and its members' access to Springer journals ended March 31, 2018. According to a SpringerNature spokesperson, the publisher will continue to provide French institutions with access to its journals while talks continue.

Portico announces the trigger of one of the first scientific e-journals - Online Journal of Current Clinical Trials

Digital preservation service Portico recently alerted to a groundbreaking journal that was no longer available to the academic community. The Online Journal of Current Clinical Trials (OJCCT) launched in 1992 as part of a collaboration between OCLC and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and was one of the earliest electronic scientific journals. While some of the articles OJCCT published are indexed in Medline and Worldcat, many of them are no longer available, including some early and important papers on randomised clinical trials.

LIBER joins call for improved Text and Data Mining Exception

Twenty eight organisations, including LIBER, have signed a letter calling for an improved Text and Data Mining Exception which will support research and innovation in Europe. The letter was sent to the European Parliament Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI). The signatories include universities, technology companies, startups and scaleups, libraries, scientific and research funding and performing organisations, open access publishers, investigative and data journalists and nonprofits.

Frontiers and Semmelweis University form OA publishing agreement

Frontiers has announced an open access publishing agreement with Semmelweis University. Semmelweis University supports open access publishing by covering 50% of article processing charges (APCs) for corresponding authors affiliated with the University who wish to publish in any Frontiers journal.
