European Archival Records and Knowledge Preservation project awarded £6 million to save digital data

The European Commission has awarded £6M to archiving and digital preservation specialists to create E-ARK (European Archival Records and Knowledge Preservation), a method of archiving data that is set to become the gold standard across Europe. The system will ensure current digital archives, including 'big data,' are future-proofed. Big data is data sets of such a size that it is difficult to manage with traditional software and databases.

Canada's Competition Bureau signs consent agreements with four publishers regarding e-book pricing policies

Canada's Competition Bureau has reportedly reached consent agreements with four multinational publishers regarding their e-book pricing policies. The agreements resolve the Bureau's concerns that the four companies - Hachette Book Group Canada, Simon & Schuster Canada, HarperCollins Canada and Macmillan Canada - "engaged in conduct that resulted in reduced competition for e-books in Canada."

FCC grants one-year waiver of e-reader accessibility requirement

On January 28, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted a one-year waiver exempting e-readers from the requirement that equipment used for advanced communication services (ACS) be accessible to, and usable by, individuals with disabilities. The FCC granted the waiver in response to a petition filed by the Coalition of E-Reader Manufacturers, but limited the waiver to only one year despite the coalition's request for an indefinite waiver.

Jisc announces programme and headline speakers for Digital Festival

Jisc has announced the programme, including four headline speakers, for its upcoming Digital Festival on March 11 – 12, 2014.
