Thomson Reuters' new industry forum whitepaper on unlocking the value of research data

The volume of scholarly and scientific research data available is projected to grow by a factor of 44 over the decade from 2010 to 2020, going from 0.8 zetabytes (ZB) to more than 35 ZB. In response to this unfathomable amount of information, the IP & Science business of Thomson Reuters convened a Forum of industry experts to discuss issues and potential solutions for the scholarly challenges ahead. It published its first output in a whitepaper titled 'Unlocking the Value of Research Data,' where Forum experts discuss the complexity of the issue and offer recommendations for the future.

Elsevier acquires Woodhead Publishing

STM publisher Elsevier has acquired UK-based publisher, Woodhead Publishing Limited. The acquisition of Woodhead Publishing also includes Chandos Publishing, which is known for its strong publishing program in library information science and Asian studies.

Library and repository communities come together to identify new competencies for academic librarians

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL), the Confederation of Open Access Repositories (COAR), and the Association of European Research Libraries (LIBER) have announced the launch of a Joint Task Force on Librarians' Competencies in Support of E-Research and Scholarly Communication. The aim of the task force is to outline the competencies needed by librarians in this evolving environment.

Vision Prize and IOP Publishing's community website, environmentalresearchweb, have signed an agreement that recognises a shared mission to communicate as widely as possible the views of scientists on issues concerning the environment. Through inviting scientists to complete short polls on key topics on climate, Vision Prize aims to provide better understanding and clearer communication of the views of scientists to the general public and financial markets.

WebMD announces new appointments

Health information services provider WebMD Health Corp. has announced that its Board of Directors has appointed David J. Schlanger as Chief Executive Officer of WebMD and Dr. Steven L. Zatz as its President. Schlanger has served as Interim CEO since May 2013 and in other senior roles at WebMD and its predecessor companies for more than ten years prior to that time.
