NISO and NFAIS issue new Recommended Practice on Online Supplemental Journal Article Materials, Part B for public comment

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) and the National Federation for Advanced Information Services (NFAIS) have issued a new Recommended Practice on Online Supplemental Journal Article Materials, Part B: Technical Recommendations (NISO RP-15-201x) for public comment until September 15, 2012. Publishers, authors, librarians, abstracting and indexing services, and repository administrators are all encouraged to review and comment on this draft.

Eight hundred academic and not-for-profit institutions in Russia gain access to Nature archives

A new agreement on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation has been signed with scientific publisher Nature Publishing Group (NPG). The agreement enables researchers, students and citizens across the country to access the Nature archives from 1869 to 2011. The agreement could provide site license access to up to 800 academic and not-for-profit institutions in more than 100 cities throughout Russia.

Scanning project never hurt book sales, says Google

Google has submitted court filings stating that its massive book scanning project is fair use because it has delivered many public benefits without harming authors. It claims the Authors Guild has shown 'no evidence that Google Books has displaced the sale of even a single book.'

Multi-author surge driven by international interest in high-energy physics, says ScienceWatch article

The Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters has reported a substantial increase in the number of multi-author papers in recent years, with many surpassing 50 authors and some reporting upwards of 3,000 authors. The trend reveals a steep increase after remaining at a fairly low level from the late 1990s to 2007 when Thomson Reuters Science Watch last surveyed the phenomenon of multi-authorship.
