Thorp will succeed Jeremy Berg, who joined AAAS in July 2016. Thorp, currently the Rita Levi-Montalcini Distinguished University Professor at Washington University, will become the 21st editor-in-chief of Science since the journal's inception in 1880 when his term begins on October 28, 2019.
