Universities in Germany win temporary access to Elsevier journals after refusing to pay fees

Dutch publishing giant Elsevier has reportedly granted uninterrupted access to its paywalled journals for researchers at around 200 German universities and research institutes that had refused to renew their individual subscriptions at the end of 2017. The institutions had formed a consortium to negotiate a nationwide licence with the publisher. They sought a collective deal that would give most scientists in Germany full online access to about 2,500 journals at about half the price that individual libraries have paid in the past.

ACS Publications records 100 million article downloads by researchers worldwide in 2017

The American Chemical Society's (ACS') Publications Division achieved a major milestone in 2017 surpassing 100 million full-text journal article downloads during the calendar year. This marks a new global usage record for the 51 peer-reviewed ACS journals, which publish research in chemistry and allied fields. Along with citations and other metrics, full-text usage provides insights on a journal's influence across the research landscape and reflects the importance of the science encompassed by its editorial scope.

Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW), an imprint of Wolters Kluwer, has announced that five Lippincott nursing education publications have been honoured as exceptional texts for advancing healthcare quality by the American Journal of Nursing (AJN) 2017 Book of the Year Awards. For 48 years, the annual AJN Book of the Year program has recognised the best in nursing publishing. The winners are chosen by a panel of judges who range from college professors to clinicians to nursing executives.

UC Press appoints Tim Sullivan as Executive Director

University of California's Office of the President has announced that Tim Sullivan will serve as the next Executive Director of the University of California Press. Sullivan was selected through an international search and an interview process that included senior UC Press employees, the UC Press Board of Directors, the Academic Senate UC Editorial Committee, and the Trustees of the UC Press Foundation.
