Clarivate Analytics and the Chinese Academy of Sciences' joint annual report highlights 100 hot research areas and 38 emerging specialties in global scientific research

Clarivate Analytics, the global leader in providing trusted insights and analytics to enable researchers to accelerate discovery, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences have released 'Research Fronts 2018', their joint annual report identifying 138 prominent subspecialties of scientific research from 2012 until 2017. A Research Front is a cluster of highly cited papers over a five year period, referred to as 'core papers' in a specialised topic, defined by co-citation and cluster analysis.

Wiley and Hindawi expand open access publishing collaboration to add four new journals

Global publisher Wiley and Hindawi have expanded their open access publishing collaboration. This announcement adds four new journals to the nine currently in the program. With open access becoming the shared vision of a number of governments worldwide and a particular focus within some European research funders, this expanded collaboration allows both Wiley and Hindawi to support the ongoing development of high-quality open access titles, as well as giving authors additional options for where and how to publish.

IEEE Blockchain for Clinical Trials EU Forum brings focus on empowering patients

Technical professional organisation IEEE and the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) have announced details of the upcoming second edition of The IEEE Blockchain for Clinical Trials Forum to be held November 13-15, 2018 at the Clinical Innovation Zone, University of Glasgow, Scotland. The Forum brings together group leaders from global and European consortia, working groups, and private pharmaceutical company pilots to provide updates on the progress of pilots and implementation of blockchain technology into clinical trials and the research process.

Amazon Web Services joins NIH's STRIDES Initiative

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has joined the National Institutes of Health's Science and Technology Research Infrastructure for Discovery, Experimentation, and Sustainability (STRIDES) Initiative. Launched in July 2018, the STRIDES Initiative aims to harness the power of commercial cloud computing for NIH biomedical researchers. Initially, NIH's efforts will focus on making high-value data sets more accessible to researchers and experimenting with new ways to optimise technology-intensive research.

Cambridge University Press to move four of its journals to Gold Open Access

Academic publisher Cambridge University Press has announced that it is moving four more of its journals from a traditional subscription model to Gold Open Access in a further demonstration of its commitment to the development of a sustainable, more open future for academic publishing. The announcement coincides with the start of Open Access Week (October 22-28), which aims to promote the benefits of Open Access and help to make it a new norm in scholarship and research.

Copyright Clearance Center, Inc. (CCC) has shared results from its 'Get Smart About Plan S' program from the 2018 Frankfurt Book Fair during International Open Access Week, October 22-28, 2018. Panelists were Tim Britton, Managing Director of the Open Research Group, Springer Nature; Malavika Legge, Acting Director of Publishing, Portland Press; and David Ross, Executive Publisher for Open Access, Sage Publishing. CCC's Rightsholder Sales Director, Chuck Hemenway, moderated the discussion.

Figshare launches its annual report - The State of Open Data 2018

Figshare, an online digital repository for academic research, has launched its annual report, The State of Open Data 2018, to coincide with global celebrations around Open Access Week. The report is the third in the series and includes survey results and a collection of articles from global industry experts, as well as a foreword from Ross Wilkinson, Global Strategy at the Australian Research Data Commons.
