SPARC applauds reintroduction of the Fair Access to Science and Technology Research Act

SPARC, an international alliance of academic and research libraries working to create a more open system of scholarly communication, has applauded the reintroduction of the Fair Access to Science and Technology Research (FASTR) Act, which would ensure that public access to research articles becomes the law of the land. FASTR calls for federal agencies with extramural research budgets in excess of $100 million to establish consistent, permanent public access policies for articles reporting on their funded research.

New Wiley survey offers new insights to aid academic associations

Results from a survey of researchers and research-based professionals by publisher John Wiley & Sons, Inc. reveal the most valued benefits offered to members by scholarly societies. When asked which aspect of society membership appeals most, 27 percent of respondents indicate that access to a peer-reviewed journal publishing scholarly research is most appealing. Another 26 percent of respondents said that continuing education and training opportunities are most valued.

Brill announces support for 'STM Principles for Article Sharing' initiative

Scholarly publisher Brill has announced its support for the STM Association's Consultation on Article Sharing. The initiative puts forward a draft of voluntary principles for the sharing of published articles via SCNs, also known as Social Sharing Networks (SSNs), as a starting point for a public discussion among stakeholders, including researchers, authors, their collaborators, librarians, SCNs and publishers alike.

EBSCO supports open resource integration through technology development

In line with its open metadata and technology sharing policy, EBSCO has shown a commitment to supporting its customers. On the heels of the recent acquisition of YBP, EBSCO has made the official company decision to develop fully open APIs for both YBP's GOBI services and its subscription service division's journal services that can be readily consumed by ILS and other technology services providers.

National Science Foundation announces plan for comprehensive public access to research results

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has announced its continued commitment to expand public access to the results of its funded research through the publication of its public access plan, Today's Data, Tomorrow's Discoveries. BMJ and eIntegrity partnership to provide e-learning for health professionals worldwide

Healthcare knowledge provider BMJ has teamed up with eIntegrity to provide e-learning programmes for health professionals around the world. NISO approves new projects to develop standards for bibliographic vocabulary exchange

The voting members of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) have approved three new projects to develop standards to better support exchange and interoperability of bibliographic data. These projects were identified as high priorities in NISO's Bibliographic Roadmap pre-standards initiative, which was funded by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
