September 10th marks the beginning of Peer Review Week 2018, the latest annual celebration of peer reviewing and its importance in maintaining standards of quality and integrity in research and scientific communication. The week's official activities include webinars and workshops devoted to this year's theme: Diversity in Peer Review.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge gain access to SpringerMaterials

The University of Cambridge has joined other institutions around the world in providing its students and researchers with access to SpringerMaterials, a research solution published by Springer Nature for identifying materials and their corresponding properties. Access to SpringerMaterials will support researchers across the University from Materials Science and Metallurgy, Chemistry, and Physics departments, as well as engineering and other related fields.

ProQuest News now discoverable via Ex Libris Primo

According to a ProQuest 2017 survey, 87 percent of faculty members recommend news sources as a research tool for students - and 72 percent use it themselves. To address the teaching, learning and research needs of the academic community, ProQuest is making more of its digital news content discoverable via Ex Libris Primo, the discovery service that delivers access across the breadth of libraries' print, electronic and digital collections.

Viability of open access books remains uncertain, says Simba report

Media and publishing intelligence firm Simba Information has released the latest edition of Open Access Book Publishing 2018-2022. The report found that despite multiple years of growth at more than 30 percent CAGR, total revenue generated from book processing charges (BPC) remains small, well under 0.5 percent of total book revenue, comparable in size to a single university press book publisher or a single open access journal publisher.

MDPI and Qatar National Library establish OA agreement

Academic open-access publisher Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI) has established an Open Access (OA) agreement with Qatar National Library (QNL). QNL is committed to supporting and helping Qatar authors publish OA at no cost. Through this national agreement, QNL will cover the Article Processing Charges (APC) of manuscripts published by Qatar-based corresponding authors in MDPI journals.

Polish Society of Orthopaedic and Traumatology to preserve OA e-journals with Portico

Digital preservation service Portico has announced that the Polish Society of Orthopaedic and Traumatology is preserving Open Access e-journals with Portico, ensuring that their content will be secure and available into the future. Established in November of 1928, the journal includes research articles that highlight the importance of better information in orthopaedics, neurosurgery, and rehabilitation.

Open research publisher Springer Nature is partnering with other publishers in promoting transparency in the peer review process by signing ASAPbio's open letter. As a leading publisher in open research, Springer Nature has long championed the move to greater transparency in peer review in particular through the BMC portfolio, which has a well-established tradition of pioneering new forms of peer review.

Wolters Kluwer announces impact factor gains across its Lippincott portfolio and Medknow open access titles

Wolters Kluwer Health has announced that seven of its Lippincott journals have been ranked #1 based on their 2017 Journal Citation Report (JCR) Impact Factor Score from Clarivate Analytics. An Impact Factor (IF) is a measurement of the frequency by which an article in a scholarly journal is cited in a particular year. Of the 204 Lippincott titles listed in the JCR rankings, 56 percent had gains over the previous year, with 24 journals increasing 25 percent or more.

Chinese Journal of Academic Radiology to launch in November

The Chinese Journal of Academic Radiology will launch in November alongside the 2018 Chinese Congress of Radiology (CCR) in Beijing. The journal is the first English-language publication to address general radiology in China. Zheng Yu Jin, president of the Chinese Society of Radiology, will serve as the journal's first editor-in-chief.
