London Info International 2016 opens the doors to its conference and exhibition in a few days. The global information community will gather there next week. An updated list of organisations and participants has been published and the organisers are looking forward to welcoming all delegates, visitors, sponsors, exhibitors and partners from all over the world to London.

Major publishers sign the ORCID Open Letter

In January 2016, eight publishers signed an open letter committing their organisations to requiring ORCID iDs for journal authors. The eight original signatories were joined by a further 12 publishers in the months that followed, and 10 publishers have now gone live with their ORCID requirement. On November 28, their efforts received a significant boost when two major societies - the American Chemical Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry - and one of the world's largest scholarly publishers, Wiley, signed the letter.

The SAGE Encyclopedia of Online Education examines the revolutionary rise of online learning

Academic publisher SAGE Publishing has announced the launch of The SAGE Encyclopedia of Online Education. Launching as a three-volume set, The SAGE Encyclopedia of Online Education addresses an array of issues related to online learning with a central focus on the effective education of students. Interdisciplinary in scope, the text includes more than 350 entries on key topics.

ALPSP partners with UCL Press and Liverpool University Press Association to deliver the University Press Redux Conference biennially

Following the success of the founding University Press Redux conference, organised by Liverpool University Press (LUP) and held in March 2016, the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) has announced a partnership with the presses to deliver the event every two years. The next event to be held in spring 2018 will be hosted and curated by UCL Press in London.

American Society of Hematology to debut new OA journal Blood Advances at 58th Annual Meeting in San Diego

American Society of Hematology has announced the launch of the open-access online journal Blood Advances. Blood has led the way in experimental and clinical hematologic research as the flagship journal of the American Society of Hematology (ASH). Blood Advances will fill a niche that complements and expands on topics covered in Blood while also transforming the conversation between authors and readers through innovative communication tools.

Alfred P. Sloan Foundation awards grant for arXiv upgrade

arXiv.org, the influential open access repository for global scientific research, will begin the first phase of a three-year overhaul and modernization with the help of a $445,000 grant by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The Sloan Foundation grant will fund the creation of a detailed blueprint for next-generation arXiv – to be known as arXiv-NG – allowing planners to establish new partnerships, identify necessary resources and build a core development team to lead the modernization process.

German hbz Consortium selects Ex Libris Rosetta digital asset management and preservation solution

Ex Libris®, a ProQuest company, has announced that the Hochschulbibliothekszentrum des Landes Nordrhein Westfalen (hbz) has chosen the Ex Libris Rosetta digital asset management and preservation solution to serve the consortium's member institutions. More than 40 hbz member institutions from North Rhine-Westphalia will be able to deposit digital collections and research data in the central Rosetta system and use Rosetta to manage and preserve these assets.

ACS Publications and the Royal Society of Chemistry jointly commit to integration with ORCID

The Royal Society of Chemistry and the Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) have become signatories to the ORCID Open Letter, reasserting the commitment of both organisations to enhancing the scholarly publishing experience for researchers worldwide who are involved in chemistry and allied fields. The commitment by these two global chemistry publishers to undertake new workflow integration with technology infrastructure provided by ORCID will enable both societies to provide unambiguous designation of author names within chemistry and across the broader sciences.

Wiley announces plans to require ORCID iDs as part of the manuscript submission process

Publisher John Wiley & Sons Inc. has announced plans to require ORCID iDs as part of the manuscript submission process for a large number of journals. Beginning in winter 2016, more than 500 Wiley journals using ScholarOne Manuscripts will require the submitting author (only) to provide an ORCID identifier (iD) when submitting a manuscript. Wiley is the first major publisher to join other stakeholders that have signed ORCID's open letter.

Nature recognises renowned Californian scientist

Susan L. Forsburg, Gabilan Distinguished Professor in Science and Engineering and Professor of Biological Sciences at The University of Southern California (USC), received the mid-career 2016 Nature Award for Mentoring in Science and a $10,000 prize. Scholarly publishing market size is decreasing, cost effective digital media is compensating

The annual generated revenue from science, technology and medicine (STM) scientific journals is estimated at about $12 billion in 2016, including books and other information within a broader STM publishing market worth some $25 billion. Open access STM journal publishing market is estimated at about $500 million in 2015 (up from $100 million in 2010, representing a CAGR of about 20%), where as subscription/paid access STM journal market is drastically decreasing to $8 billion by 2016 ($12.5 billion in 2014).

IOP Publishing and IEPM renews journals contract

IOP Publishing has announced a renewed contract with the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), for the continued publication of two of its journals – Physics in Medicine and Biology and Physiological Measurement. The renewal of the contract, which will start in 2018, marks the latest chapter in the long-standing relationship between IOP Publishing and IPEM.
