Elsevier unveils 6 new orthopaedic textbooks at 2016 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Conference

STM publisher Elsevier has announced that it will launch six new orthopaedic textbooks at this year's American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) conference taking place at the Orange County Convention Center, West Building, Orlando, FL, March 1-5, 2016. To support Elsevier's presence at the AAOS conference, several "Meet the Author" events are scheduled to take place at the Elsevier booth (#1903).

Clinical trials published in high-impact journals come under scrutiny

Clinical trials published in high-impact journals such as the Lancet or the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) have recently come under scrutiny. Editors from the BMJ and PLOS Open Medicine recently sought to quantify the number of clinical trials in respected, peer-reviewed medical journals that could be classified as 'marketing trials.' While the editors noted the difficulty in determining the true research objective of trials, they endeavoured to classify characteristics of trials which appeared to be marketing oriented.

Oxford University Press to publish Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society and the Aristotelian Society Supplementary Volume

Academic publisher Oxford University Press (OUP) will be the publishers of the Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society and the Aristotelian Society Supplementary Volume. Proceedings is the official journal of the Aristotelian Society: one of the oldest and most prestigious philosophy societies. The first issue of the Proceedings OUP will publish online in April 2016.

HIMSS announces new leadership in executive management team

Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) has announced that Blain Newton will become Executive Vice President of HIMSS Analytics, as of March 1, when current EVP John Hoyt retires from the position. R. Norris Orms, HIMSS executive vice president and chief operating officer, also will retire as of July 1. HIMSS President and Chief Executive Officer H. Stephen Lieber, CAE, announced the changes, as the Society prepares for the opening of the 2016 HIMSS Annual Conference & Exhibition from Feb. 29-March 1 in Las Vegas.

The Frankfurt Book Fair, scheduled for October 19-23, 2016, and Publishing Perspectives will host THE MARKETS: Global Publishing Summit for the second year now. First of several draft outputs from the NISO Altmetrics Initiative is now available for input from stakeholders

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) is seeking comments on the draft Altmetrics Data Quality Code of Conduct, NISO RP-25-201X-3, one output of a multi-pronged, multi-phase project that aims to build trust in and adoption of new methods of assessing impact. Further draft outputs from two other working groups, addressing altmetrics definitions, use cases, specific output types, and use of persistent identifiers, are expected to be released for public comment in the coming weeks.

New partnership between PNAS and Overleaf to provide PNAS authors with direct access to Overleaf

The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) and Overleaf have announced a partnership providing PNAS authors with direct access to Overleaf, a cloud-based scientific authoring platform that makes it easy for researchers to write, collaborate, and publish documents.
