CAS expands product portfolio with the launch of Formulus, a formulations-specific solution

CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society that specialises in scientific information solutions, has expanded its product portfolio with the launch of Formulus®, a new solution aimed at getting innovations to market faster by addressing the unique information needs of formulations scientists. With product development accounting for an estimated 30% of overall R&D costs, industries including pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals and cosmetics are seeking to spark innovation and increase efficiency.

AAP Issues call for entries for 2020 PROSE Awards

The Association of American Publishers 2020 PROSE Awards, which recognise outstanding scholarly books, journals, and e-products, are open for entries through November 15, 2019. The awards recognise the very best scholarly works published in the United States in the arts, humanities, biological and physical sciences, reference, and social sciences. These works must have secured a 2019 copyright notice.

ARL supports University of California Libraries' commitment to barrier free access to information

The Libraries of the University of California (UC) are seeking transformative agreements with publishers such that access to the research of UC faculty is open to all, not limited to those who can afford it. In February 2019, the UC Libraries withdrew from negotiations with publisher Elsevier due to lack of progress, and in July, Elsevier cut off access to current content for all UC campuses. The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) expresses strong support for the UC Libraries in their efforts to initiate change and expand access to research.

EMBO Press and ASAPbio partner to launch Review Commons, a pre-journal portable review platform

EMBO Press and ASAPbio have partnered to create Review Commons, a platform that peer-reviews research manuscripts in the life sciences before submission to a journal. Papers submitted to Review Commons, which will be launched in December 2019, will be assessed by expert referees without regard to any journal to which they might ultimately be submitted, and will be judged exclusively for their scientific rigor and merit. Review Commons will enable authors to publicly post the reviews and their own response to them on the preprint server bioRxiv and to submit their reviewed manuscript to an affiliated journal.

Prof. Nancy Morrison named new Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Association of Variable Star Observers

The Journal of the American Association of Variable Star Observers (JAAVSO) has announced the appointment of Prof. Nancy Morrison (University of Toledo) as the new Editor-in-Chief, effective October 1, 2019. Prof. Morrison succeeds Prof. John Percy (University of Toronto) who has led the journal for the past ten years. JAAVSO is a refereed research publication available to the entire community of variable star researchers, promoting the AAVSO's overall mission—to enable anyone, anywhere, to participate in scientific discovery through variable star astronomy.
