Metadata at Scale: Why Scholarly Publishing Must Go AI-First
As scholarly content becomes increasingly modular—spanning datasets, figures, protocols, and other micro-components—the need for consistent, granular metadata has never been more critical. Yet manual tagging practices can no longer keep pace with the volume, complexity, and speed of modern publishing. When metadata is incomplete or inconsistent, even high-quality research becomes difficult to find, weakening discoverability, linking, and indexing. AI-first approach is essential for solving these challenges. By automating the heavy lifting of tagging, validating fields, aligning ontologies, and identifying gaps, AI enables more accurate and scalable metadata creation. Editors remain central, providing oversight and judgment while AI manages the repetitive work. Together, they ensure research stays visible, connected, and meaningful in an increasingly fragmented ecosystem.
